Santos was born March 23, 1951 and was married to and survived by his wife Karen Lopez and his children. Santos served with me as a Candidate brother the first six months of my candidate year. I learned a lot from his example and as the years passed, his example to all of the pirates became much greater. When I think back on my memories of Santos, one thing stands out more then any other, his selflessness. Every time we crossed paths, he was doing something in the service of someone other then himself. Whether it was speaking about Dystonia which was always in his mind, or bringing new ideas or well thought out offerings to the club, or even just feeding the crew from his own stores before Marysville, he did so with a generosity of heart and spirit that is hard to even consider matching. The loss of a single pirate is a loss to all. Godspeed and good winds brother.

Daddy, Your guiding hand on my shoulder will remain with forever. My Daddy was a very caring, loving, compasionate man. He would give you his last $1 and the shirt off his back not to see a soul suffer. He loved his pirate brothers it was one of his life's happiest moments and times of his life. I love you Daddy, Your little girl...

We had many moments my friend, many. These moments of time well never be forgotten. I remember the first days with aching feet and sore knees. Nothing stopped you. Nothing except the need to help others. Building those special moments in time makes it all worth while. Thank you for the chance to build many moments that will never be forgotten. Santos My brother, I will never forget our last conversation. Your love of of your wife and desire to combat her illness and bring attention to it were just one of your many passions. "Individually we all can make a difference, Together we can make an impact" you reminded me of my own words often. After many discussions regarding your one man sword show at Torchlight. Yes it did look great. It was typical Santos. Love you. We wish you fair winds and smooth Sailing.

Though I seem far physically, it's mentally, I'm not, as I am among the spirit of a Seafair Pirate, "all for one and one for all". Though 1982-1988 was my Pirate Season one thing you learn and take with you forever is that you always admire, honor and understand all the crew members and what it is to be a Seattle Seafair Pirate. It is still one of the greatest achievements of my life. As you brother Pirates read this and feel the honor in which I share in memory of Santos, it's always a difficult time when we lose a crew member who was a part of this Pirate spirit. As I was honored to talk with Mark Jenson on the radio in celebration of the SI Swimsuit Issue this week, it gave me the sense and the feelings all over again to remember the first Cayman Is. Trips and how I saw vision of its growth so long ago. To then hear the next day of a loss of a crew member, though I never knew Santos, it is to know the feeling and the thoughts of a loss of another unique member who gave it his best, who shared his best, who always stood tall to be a crew member of one honored group. Santos! the honor is yours...A Seattle Seafair Pirate, SERVED......we thank you for your honor, your service, your friendship to the community. May you be at peace and know your legend here stands tall always among the past, present and future of The Seattle Seafair Pirates. "May it be good winds, and sails full" always for your journey mate! - Mark Christopher

My enduring memory of Santos is that he always takes time to care and to teach. At any moment, either on a DUKW work party, a parade route, or a pre-parade barbecue, he'll show you his heart, and make sure you are growing at his side. Many people in this life care for those around them, but few, like Santos, take time to make sure others cared as well. We'll all do well to keep Santos in our hearts, and live to honor his memory.

One of Santos's last acts as a pirate was to organize and deliver customized pocket knives for his brother pirates. I'm looking at the knife and it will remain a positive remembrance of Santos the man. He gave his time and energy to make others experiences better. Fair winds my friend.

Please pass this on to the Lopez family, our prayers and hearts go out to them. I had never met Santos, but talked to him many times on the phone and numerous emails about 3 years ago. He was trying to get me an electric scooter to get around after surgery I had put me in a wheelchair. He did have a huge heart of gold. Since then Gary and I have become a part of the Seafair Family and are Parade Marshals. We didn't know until this was announced on the news tonight that he had passed away. I am still in shock. He will be missed. Roberta and Gary

Santos Lopez, When you called me 3 yrs ago I was in shock that I actually had gotten a call from a Seafair Pirate. Well today when I heard you had passed I felt that shock again in my heart, and the tears came. You worked hard to help me get more mobile and I truly appreciated it. Your family, and brotherhood all know how you wanted to help when you could. I have been around the Seafair family's all my life and was hoping to see you this year, but God didn't have that in the cards for us to meet. I just recently was diagnosed with Breast Cancer, and caught it early and I am so blessed. But I am still recovering. YOU did have a huge heart of gold. Since then Gary and I have become a part of the Seafair Family and are Parade Marshals. Santos Lopez will be missed, and I did cry when I heard, but tears are cleansing for all of us. I want to send our love and prayers to your family that you have left, one day we will all meet. Roberta and Gary

It is one of the world's greatest tragedies to have lost Santos so soon. He was so filled with life that it is not possible to imagine life being taken from him. His dedication to Dystonia and helping people highlights the love in his heart. I offer profound sympathy for his family and all who loved him. We can carry on his legacy by continuing with the programs that he started for years to come.

I wish to say farewell big man. May GOd be with your family. We know that you are in the better place and that you are now one of HIS Angels watching over your family and friends. I personally did not know you but I have been involved in helping families get the Christmas Treasure help every year. You are one of the family within the pirates that i will all admire for all of the hard work and humor and sacrifice that you have done. You are now within a greater sphere and your children and wife should know you are looking after them. When your family and friends feel that little breeze against their cheek they will know that you are whispering your love for them . When they are outside at night they will know to look up and see that bright shining star is your way of saying I LOVE You. GOD Bless you and yours.
